The Greater Miami Health Education and Training Center (GMHETC) is a medical education project of The Center for Haitian Studies, Health & Human
Services. The project is partly funded by The Area Health Education (AHEC) through the University of Miami’s Department of Family
Medicine/Community Health Affairs to:

a) provide culturally sensitive medical education and clinical training to medical students, residents and fellows from the University of Miami Miller School
of Medicine and The Jackson Health System;

b) develop culturally competent educational materials for Creole, French, English and Spanish-speaking patients; and

c) broadcast health care information.

The GMHETC/Center for Haitian Studies’ program uses a number of affiliated sites to provide training for medical students, residents, fellows and visiting
physicians.
The Greater Miami Health Education and Training Center (GMHETC) also provides a 12-week -Advance Introduction to Clinical Medicine (AICM) course
for 3rd Year Medical Students who are enrolled in medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and/or are enrolled
in international medical schools that are  licensed to conduct medical clerkship activities in the State of Florida. Students may attend rounds, conferences,
and shadow residents and attending physicians at affiliated clinical training sites. The program offers an excellent opportunity for medical students to
develop clinical skills and to learn about culturally competent approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of disease among patients from various ethnic and
cultural backgrounds.

Purpose and Objectives:
The Training offered by GMHETC is designed to introduce students to the practice of clinical medicine. At the end of the nine week training course, the
medical student will:
a) have learned patient interview and physical examination techniques.
b) have obtained basic skills in conducting physical examinations and writing patient reports
c) be informed about culturally competent approaches to diagnosing patients’ problems and providing care and treatment.

Program components:
Clinical Training: Under the Program, students are placed in GMHETC-affiliated sites (hospitals/outpatient clinics) under the supervision of qualified
physicians licensed to practice medicine in the State of Florida. At these sites, students interact with patients, conduct physical examinations and receive
guidance from the GMHETC-affiliated physicians.

Lectures/Conferences:
Students are also required to attend conferences and lectures as part of their clinical training. These lectures may cover special medical cases, as well as
presentations by students and group discussions.

Evaluation:
At the end of the training period, physicians/instructors who have trained students evaluate the trainees who have been placed under their supervision. After
completion, these evaluation forms will then be sent to the Dean of the Medical School attended by the student. Students will also be asked to fill out an
evaluation form documenting the strengths and weaknesses of their training experience. These forms are reviewed by the GMHETC Board and used to
upgrade future training.
