Our Story

A Legacy of Care and Empowerment

The Center for Haitian Studies (CHS) was founded in 1988 with a clear mission: to serve the disenfranchised populations of Little Haiti, Little River, and North Miami. From the beginning, CHS was established as a response to the urgent health and social needs of Haitian immigrants and other underserved communities in Miami-Dade County. As a trusted community resource, CHS became the main provider of HIV/AIDS-related services to Haitian Americans, offering direct support and essential healthcare services when few others would.

Over the years, CHS has grown into a pillar of support for the community, expanding our services to address the broader health and social needs of those who are uninsured, underinsured, or undocumented. We provide primary and specialty care—including pediatrics, mental health, OBGYN, and case management—entirely free of charge to those who need it most. We also offer vital services such as health education, literacy, cultural adaptation for new immigrants, and public outreach to ensure that our community is informed and empowered.

Greater Miami Health Education & Training Center

Partnering for the Future of Healthcare

The Center for Haitian Studies (CHS) and the Greater Miami Health Education & Training Center (GMHETC) work hand in hand to provide diverse and high-quality clinical training opportunities to medical students from around the world. Together, we collaborate with local hospitals, medical community centers, and private practices to offer clerkships across a range of specialties.

Our commitment to supporting future physicians goes beyond education; we focus on fostering empathy, awareness, and leadership in every student, ensuring they’re ready to face the challenges of modern healthcare.
